Inspired by the rising popularity of miniature houses, students will examine small spaces and how limited square footage can inspire exciting design innovation. They will also be introduced to sustainable design strategies that can make tiny homes energy-efficient enough to support off-the-grid living. Students will then design their own tiny house using 3D design software and save 2D images of their final projects for their portfolio. A dedicated, working Board of Directors — members of L.A.’s architecture and design communities — produces our public programming and publications. Our events, newsletters, books, and competitions speculate on urbanism and create dialogues around contemporary design. Our programming routinely features the work of emerging and boundary-pushing designers.

As the effects of climate change continue to reshape the places where we live, as economic and political strains threaten people’s access to art and culture, the Getty stands as a testament to resilience and equity. As one moves higher within the complex, the temperature and color of plants increases in relationship to the degree of exposure to the sun. Cooler blue-greens, blues, purples and greys prevail in lower areas and northern exposures while warm greens and yellows characterize the hotter, south-facing exposures at higher elevations. For staff and visitors, the gardens create an exquisitely appointed vestibule for the offices and museum and set the stage for the treasures encountered within.

Evolving from a generalist nature of practice to a more specified studio has allowed for a comprehensive understanding of creative problem solving and an opportunity to view design challenges from multiple perspectives. With so many architecture firms to choose from, it’s challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in Los Angeles based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge. Viennese transplant Richard Neutra designed the experimental house at 2300 Silverlake Blvd and built it with a no-interest loan from Dutch philanthropist Dr. C.H. Van Der Leeuw. Neutra wanted to demonstrate that even on a small, hemmed in lot he could create a home that allowed private and spacious living. The original 2100 square foot house, built in 1932, was built to the edges of the lot and vertically on two stories to take advantage of the views of Silverlake Reservoir and the San Gabriel Mountains.

At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. Many firms describe their work as “transformative” — architecture as an accomplished fact. By collaborating closely with our clients throughout the design process, we are better able to inspire them with the finished product. By working closely with trusted tradespersons, we can deliver work that is uncompromising in craftsmanship. In 1983 Hertz founded Syndesis Inc and invented the material manufacturing process of Syndecrete®, the innovative pre-cast lightweight concrete surfacing material.

Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles was designed to look like a ship sailing down Grand Avenue with its giant silver sails unfurled. One of the best things about the Disney Concert Hall is that you can climb all over it. There are stairways and walkways that allow you to go up and walk around those great sails and get some really cool photos.

Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape. “I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says. The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green. The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor.

Each student’s piece of the city will come together at the end of the week to create a collective vision of a sustainable waterfront city. The Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design is an independent nonprofit organization that instigates dialogues on design and the built environment through public programming, exhibitions, and publications. Is a catalytic place for architecture and design, offering lessons that extend globally. Our curatorial stance frames and challenges what architecture means in an evolving city.

Exhibitions

Learning about amazing skyscrapers around the world offers inspiration for students to design their own skyscraper through drawings and models. The Center for Architecture offers walking tours, exhibitions, lectures, kids workshops, films, book talks and other events on the topics of architecture, urban planning and design. The project has been one of the most ambitious in the Freedom by Design club, housed within the American Institute of Architects student chapter at NC State. Students in Freedom by Design are committed to designing and building solutions to community problems, and have worked with teachers and administrators at the Governor Morehead School to anticipate and account for student needs in this space. Perched atop a steep hillside in the heart of Los Angeles, the Windsor Residence commands breathtaking vistas of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Silverlake Reservoir, and the glistening skyline of downtown.

RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIORS (

The ensuite bathroom, finished in a soothing palette of gray and wood, features a freestanding tub and a sleek glass-enclosed shower, providing a spa-like retreat. The kitchen, bathed in natural light, showcases a stunning blend of modern and natural materials. Clean-lined cabinetry and a sleek white countertop provide a refined backdrop, while the warm wood tones of the ceiling and floating shelves add a touch of organic elegance. Pendants with a industrial-inspired aesthetic complete the sophisticated design. The home’s strategic placement on the site capitalizes on the dramatic topography, with the double-height living area delicately balanced atop a retained wall, a remnant from a previous structure. This thoughtful design decision not only overcomes the challenging terrain but also enables the creation of a private covered outdoor living area, providing a serene contrast to the sweeping city views.

The Mackey Artist and Architects-in-Residency is a six-month residencies to international artists and architects, selected by an international jury through an annual competition. Residents live and work in the Mackey Apartments, and present projects in exhibitions at the end of their term in March and September. KM Architecture Office’s design of The Grand House in Vĩnh Tường, Vietnam, is centered around creating a shared home for an extended family that returns to their hometown.

ArcLight is one of the costliest movie theatres in LA, and you're as likely to see celebrities in the audience as in the movies. The 14-acre campus is a showcase for the interior design trades, but also has some public galleries and lots of public art. You can photograph the outside as much as you want, but taking photos inside is discouraged.

Students can bring their own mouse or CFA will provide a wired mouse for student use. Students will be sent a link to download the free SketchUp trial software prior to the first day of class. To locate articles on your building, you will need to search an index that specializes in architectural subjects.

Brooklyn Scotto, former director and Katherine Brooks, current director spoke passionately about the importance of teamwork to make this design a reality. “This project was born out of a simple yet powerful idea to create a space where children of all ages, regardless of their circumstance, can come together to play, learn and experience the joy of childhood,” said Brooks. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design.
